Accessing Cookies Across Different Domains

Cookie is small piece of textual information saved by a website [domain] on user’s browser. Basic use of cookie is to identify user or any user related information in future and serve content accordingly. For example, if you select “Stay signed in” checkbox while login to your mailbox, it would take you directly to your inbox when you access it in future.  It is simply because of cookie placed in your browser.

Cookie consists of name-value pair where name is used to identify cookie on the server. It is set by the web-server [domain] in users’ browser through HTTP header. Cookie is sent with every users’ request made to web-server [domain]. Cookie can be set by web-server using server side scripts like ASP, C#, JSP, Perl, PHP etc. Or it can also be created by client-side script like JavaScript.

Here we have to understand that a cookie, set by a web-server, can be accessed by the same web-server [domain]. It can’t be taken as disadvantage since it protects user’s information being used by unauthorized domain. But in some cases, it required to access a cookie by domain which is set by another domain.  For example, a shopping cart is hosted on domain example.com. For login and cart item the domain has created cookie(s) in user’s browser. Now for payment process, the user is directed to another domain [let’s say payment.com] which is integrated with payment gateway. If you want to access the cookie set by example.com, it would not be possible as cookie set a domain can’t be accessed or modified by another domain. It is only possible by a way around it.

Steps to access cookie across domain:

  1. Create cookie on user’s browser using JavaScript on your first domain.
  2. Set the name of the window to whatever value of cookie you want to carry to another domain by using window.name.
  3. Step 2 should be performed on every page of the domain which has created the cookie. It could be easily by calling a JavaScript file on all pages.
  4. When you move to another domain, and want to access the above mentioned cookie value, access it by using window.name as window has not changed.
  5. Create new cookie on this domain and assign this value to it.

This is how cookie can be accessed across different domain. Enjoy this sweet piece of cookie.

PS: The above method is not applicable if user is moving to different domain in a new window.

Google Dance

Google DanceWhat is Google Dance?
“Google Dance” is nothing but a term used to depict major index update by Google search engine.

The Reason webmasters and Search Engine Optimizers were interested in the dance is to know  keyword positions on Google in future by checking the other Google servers as they use to be updated before the main server google.com. If you have added new pages and want to know if they have been indexed, checking Google data centers will provide you an image of your page in future SERP’s.

The Google data centers do not receive the new Google update index at the same time. The new Google update index is transferred to one Google data center after the other. If you check the results from one server to another during the Google update they will differ, and it changes as each Google server is updated, hence the term, Google Dance.

Google Dance – Every Minute, Every Time!

Earlier webmasters used to wait for “Google dance” to see their ranking updates and Page rank update whether it’s been increased or decreased, but now a days you rarely hear people are talking about Google Dance. Comparatively, now Google’s minor updates are done throughout the day which includes index update every minute and algorithmic update several times in a month. google-dance

From the summer of 2000 to the summer of 2003, index updates tended to happen about once a month. The resulting changes were called the Google Dance. The Google Dance occurred over the course of 6-8 days because each data center in turn had to be taken out of rotation and loaded with an entirely new web index, and that took time. In the summer of 2003 (the Google Dance called “Update Fritz”), Google switched to an index that was incrementally updated every day (or faster). Instead of a monolithic monthly event, the Google would refresh some of its index pretty much every day, which generated much smaller day-to-day changes that some people called everflux.
Over the years, Google’s indexing has been streamlined, to the point where most regular people don’t even notice the index updating. As a result, the terms “everflux,” “Google Dance,” and “index update” are hardly ever used anymore (or they’re used incorrectly). Instead, most SEOs talk about algorithm updates or data updates/refreshes. Most data refreshes are index updates, although occasionally a data refresh will happen outside of the day-to-day index updates. For example, updated backlinks and PageRanks are made visible every 3-4 months.
Said by Matt Cutts.

Google Dance not only updates the PR and the number of index pages a website holds, but also the back-links indexed. Check Google Dance Update Schedule for 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Resultrix powers to maiden victory

Resultrix - Victory team

Resultrix - Victory team

Resultrix Media roared to victory in their inaugural match of the Agency & Media Cricket League yesterday, winning by 18 runs over the Zee – All Sports Magazine team.  The team, lead by Gulrez Alam, COO & founder of Resultrix, took part in this competition held for Agencies & Media companies for the first time. Batting first, the team notched up an impressive 74 for five in their 10 overs.

The opening was led by Rohan Mane & Wasim, but an early loss, thanks to some unnecessary miscommunication between the batsmen led to the fall of Rohan in the first over. Not to be dismayed, it was the captain who walked out to the middle & formed a sensibly partnership with Wasim for the second wicket. They both stayed solid & kept the scoreboard ticking, building a healthy score of 52 runs in the next 6 overs.

All Sports Magazine finally got the break they were desperate for, when a tired looking Gulrez was trapped leg before by some aggressive bowling. That wicket led to a temporary swing the momentum, with 3 quick wickets, including that of opener Wasim who was looking to threaten the scoreline with his aggressive batting was bowled by a fine swinging delivery. Two wickets in two balls looked to have reduced the score, but some last over power hitting by Aamir helped them reach a respectable score of 74 at the end of their 10 overs.
In reply, the chasing team could only notch up 56 runs, giving Resultrix team a well earned victory. The bowling was led by Aamir, who finished with figures of 1 for 21 from his four overs.

Gulrez Alam (pictured), was declared the Man-of-the-Match for his overall contribution to the game. He showed a lot of composure during his batting & also took an important breakthrough from his two over bowled.

A delighted looking Rohan, who bowled his two over with figures of 1 for 14, was quoted saying “It’s just an amazing feeling, to be part of this winning team. We all came together and put in a collective performance out on the field. This was the first match for the team, and to come here & win means a lot to all of us.”

The captain, posing with his trophy, said after the game “I want to thank the team for their fantastic performance. There is still a long way to go, but if we can put in another strong performance like this, we will surely make it to the next round.”
The team play Outlook Magazine on Sunday, knowing a victory will ensure their qualification to the knock-out stage.

An update to the Google Adwords Display URL Policy

Display URL displayed on your ad allows your users to identify your site.

Sample Ad:
Performance Marketing Co?
We Help you Decide the Right Online
Marketing Mix – Resultrix. Drop by!
Resultrix.com

The point of the display URL is to give users a clear idea of what website they’ll be taken when they click on the ad.

The display URL is limited to 35 characters and cannot be used as another line of ad text

Adwords has made a minor policy change in the display url policy this week for all ads leading to sites on hosted domains, will need to have display URLs that accurately reflect their destinations.
i.e. You have to include the subdomain now. So if your destination url is blog.Resultrix.com, you have to display that, and not use Resultrix.com.

Incorrect:
Destination URL: http://adwords.blogspot.com
Display URL: blogspot.com

Correct:
Destination URL: http://adwords.blogspot.com
Display URL: adwords.blogspot.com

Ads which don’t follow these guidelines would be disapproved.
